The words don't need to be said, because you can see it in their eyes, and that is what I wanted to paint. The internal struggle Bon Iver shows in those lines is the inner conflict the whole song is about: the retreat. Saying you would walk across any thousand lands for someone, then immediately pulling it back.

I see a lot of myself in that. I was carrying three big canvases down Upper Street in Islington, and it was manic, everybody rushing with their work clothes on.

I, however, was walking home listening to music, enjoying the weather, about to go and paint for the evening. Something about that moment really resonated with me, and I had this idea for a painting where the canvas comes alive and dances out of the page. It captures the joy I was feeling at that time. So I painted it, and animated it, frame by frame.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1037/7140/6684/files/DSC02872-1-scaled_b69845c7-a620-4695-802e-91fba8c47544.jpg?v=1783950689
darling-always-original
Darling Always — Original

Acrylic on canvas. It catches the eye for the obvious reasons, but it was the look in the man's eyes that took me off guard. At first glance he seems happy, which he is, but there is a layer of sadness underneath, the kind of look you see in someone speaking fondly about a loved one who is no longer with them. Joy in the memories, anguish in their absence.

So I built a story around that universal feeling. The man has lost his wife and cannot bear the weight of her absence; there is no joy left, and no meaning in a life without her. Then, one day in his grief, he realises there is a goat in his house with no idea where it came from. He shoos it out. It doesn't work. Over the following days the goat keeps appearing, following him to the shops, sneaking back inside, turning up in his local pub. Each time, he pushes it away.

But as it keeps returning, he develops a fondness for his new friend. He lets it walk with him, keep him company as he drowns his sorrows, sleep beside the fire. The goat is not just a pet he comes to tolerate: it represents loss, pain, and learning to live with grief. We never "get over" losing someone. We learn to live with it, and find ways for their memory to keep bringing us joy.

The typography tries to complement that feeling. "Darling Always", the whole of it, in two words.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1037/7140/6684/files/Darling_Always_5f3aee17-52e3-417b-806b-35bf4ce70e89.jpg?v=1785318546
or-in-ngach-ait-original
Ór in ngach áit — Original

Acrylic on canvas. If you know it, you'll recognise how, on a sunny day, its patrons sit and stand on the street outside. It is lucky enough to catch the evening sunlight, and the scene is one of pure joy.

Last spring, on the first sunny day of the season, I was sitting outside the pub and felt the warm sun hit my skin for what felt like the first time in years. The happiness it brought was something I couldn't describe. Finally I could put words to what I was feeling, all the more special being my native language.

So the work tries to capture it all: the sun, the happiness, the patrons of the Plimsoll pub, and the beginning of spring.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1037/7140/6684/files/Scan4adj_c4a83eb5-6484-4cd9-87d6-001e958a45e3.jpg?v=1785318560
a-few-more-original
A Few More — Original

Acrylic on canvas. It's about taking a moment to yourself to realise all the good things that are happening in the world.

It's about all the emotions you feel when you're alone with yourself. Insured courier, £25 UK, or collect in London for free.

Daffodil is a tribute to the unsettling chaos of London summer. It's based on the song of the same name by Jamie xx.

On the surface it's an exploration of the romance that so often comes with summer. The character has a mystifying look, hard to pin down, but there is unmistakably romance and interest behind her stare. The lyrics that inspired the painting describe a London summer night where something began, presumably a romance of sorts, and the lines that follow talk about placing a daffodil in someone's hair.

That juxtaposition is what I wanted to paint. Daffodils are not summer flowers. They largely die out before summer even begins. For me, that gives the song and the painting a different meaning. It becomes a summer that happens directly after a relationship ends, the chaotic kind, where you're trying to process it at the worst possible time, while the chaos of London summer fills the air. Trying to find solace in connection with other people, but deep down feeling the pain of losing someone and the weirdness of moving on.

The daffodil in her hair is a reminder of the relationship that once was.
