Ór in ngach áit (Gold Everywhere)

Ór in ngach áit is an Irish phrase which means “Gold Everywhere.”

The inspiration behind this piece came from a bad day in the office.

Working in an office in Canary Wharf in the best of times is a dull experience. Throw in a lack of enjoyment for the job you are doing and the pain is magnified.

Last summer there was one particular day where it all got to be too much. I left the office that day fed up. The stuffiness of our 10th-floor office on one of the nicest days of the year had put me in a seriously bad mood. I decided that my usual route home on the Jubilee line would have tipped me over the edge, so I decided to make the 40-minute Lime bike ride home.

Google Maps brought me home in the most questionable way, down the narrow canal up to North London. The very narrow misses of getting knocked into the canal perked me up from my bad mood and opened my eyes to what was happening around me. The joy on that journey home was completely infectious. The sun really brings out the best of London, and seeing everyone laughing, relaxing, and spending time with friends and family instantly put me in a good mood.

One particular scene caught my eye just outside Broadway Market. Two friends sitting on a bench with a massive sunflower as the backdrop to the scene jumped out at me as a real-life posing of a painting. I decided to recreate the scene as a reminder of the occasion, with the text “Ór in ngach áit” encapsulating that there are golden moments to be found when you open your eyes to it.
