Through Your Eyes is a painting about retreat. The kind that happens at the end of a relationship, when nothing gets said out loud but everything shows in the eyes.
It was inspired by “33 GOD” by Bon Iver. Two lines stayed with me. The first is about looking through someone’s mind. The second offers to cross any distance for a person and then takes the offer back in the same breath, and that one is the whole painting. It is the internal monologue that talks you out of needing someone. Convincing yourself you are fine. Deciding you would be better off just getting on with it.
I see a lot of myself in that. Caring about someone deeply and protecting yourself by pretending you don’t. The words never need to be said. You can see it in their eyes. That’s what I wanted to paint.
