Through Your Eyes is a painting about retreat. The kind that happens at the end of a relationship, when nothing gets said out loud but everything shows in the eyes.
It was inspired by the song “33 GOD” by Bon Iver. Two lines stayed with me: “I’ve been looking through your mind” and “I woulda walked across any thousand lands, no not really if you can’t.” That second line is the whole painting. Saying you would cross a thousand lands for someone, then taking it back in the same breath. It’s the internal monologue that talks you out of needing someone. Convincing yourself you’re fine. That you can go forward in the light. That you’d better just fold your clothes and move on.
I see a lot of myself in that. Caring about someone deeply and protecting yourself by pretending you don’t. The words never need to be said. You can see it in their eyes. That’s what I wanted to paint.
